About the Author
Leo Tolstoy was born in 1828 and is considered to be one of the greatest authors of all time. War and Peace was first published in 1869, but Tolstoy also wrote other classics, including Anna Karenina. During trips to Europe, he met and was influenced by Victor Hugo, as well as the anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Tolstoy eventually died in 1910 from pneumonia.Aylmer and Louise Maude were married in 1884 at the British vice-consulate in Moscow. The two were friends of Leo Tolstoy and translated many of his works including War and Peace and Anna Karenina, and Aylmer penned the writer’s biography The Life of Tolstoy. Aylmer died in 1938, aged 80, and Louise the following year.
